CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Masaomi Kida, Chatroom Alias: Bacura
Age: 16
Canon: Durarara!!

World Description: Ikebukuro, Tokyo

History: Gold Star for Effort

CRAU: N/A

Death:
Masaomi's death will come at the end of the Yellow Scarves Arc. Unlike in canon, when Masaomi takes on his gang after being dethroned, Horada finds the guts to pull the trigger on his former boss. Masaomi passes out in his friends' arms and dies during their mad rush to a hospital.

What are your plans for this character in-game?
For the most part, I'm looking to go with the flow. Masaomi changes a lot depending on who he interacts with, so the CR I develop with him will influence my direction. He could become more and more desperate to hide his darker side - his depression, anxiety, insecurity, anger, etc. - and play at being happy even here, or he could begin to embrace it as others do and become more involved in the overarching plot. No matter what, I am looking to play the "powerless kid trying to prove himself to the others in an eerie survival situation" angle though.

What aspects of this game and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with?
Masaomi is a character fully willing to sacrifice himself for the people he cares about. He's too willing, honestly. I would love to explore a Masaomi who has achieved that, but (for lack of a better word) now has to live with the fact that he's dead. I'm also a fan of horror games in general, and Masaomi is a great character to uncover disturbing or creepy mysteries with because of his conflicting personas of carefree lover and vengeful fighter.

How does your character generally get along with other people?
Masaomi is a loud and outgoing extrovert who needs other people around in order to thrive. His default with women is to immediately launch into terrible pick-up lines at a distance, while he's rowdy and touchy-feely with his guy friends. Not everyone can handle him and his tendency to turn everything into a dumb joke, but he can befriend just about anyone who hasn't harmed someone he loves. Anyone who comes to consider him their friend has earned a loyal knight for life.

What is your character's mental state upon entering the game?
Masaomi will feel satisfied in a way he hasn't for years. He finally did it. He overcame his fear and was able to save his friends the way he couldn't save Saki. The implications of having to live an afterlife, a particularly bleak one at that, will only sink in over time as he inevitably begins to doubt himself.

Skills/Abilities:
As a dumb teenager, Masaomi has no superhuman skills or abilities. He's dangerous in your average street fight, though he's self-taught and undisciplined in any martial art. He also has a spot-on intuition and ability to read people. He just has a nasty habit of ignoring his intuition whenever the people involved are close to him. While his instincts are flawless, his judgment is painfully bad.

Flaws/Weaknesses:
As he has been told over and over and has long since accepted, Masaomi is a true, blue coward. There are many things he is afraid of: Izaya Orihara, guns, isolation, failure, betrayal, his own dark side, not being able to protect his friends (Mikado Ryuugamine, Anri Sonohara) or his ex-girlfriend (Saki Mikajima). What frightens him most, however, is that people will realize just how flawed and cowardly he is. This is why he tries so desperately to put up a smiling front whether he's truly happy or not. Bubbling beneath his unshakable love for his friends is also a fear that those very friends would hate him should they come to know what he's really like, that sometimes he's the one who needs help instead of providing it. That is much more terrifying than any amount of pain he could be made to endure. He simply cannot cope with losing people, often resorting to running away from them before they get the chance to leave. He'd rather give everything up himself than have it taken away from him again.

This also stems from life-long trust issues. Masaomi's parents never cared much about him, letting him roam around on his own at four in the morning even when he was a little kid. Then scheming information broker Izaya Orihara bulldozed into his life, coaxed Masaomi into relying on him, and shattered his tiny world with a set-up that left his girlfriend in a coma. Since then, not only does Masaomi not trust adults/authority even in life-threatening situations, he has trouble believing that anyone but his girlfriend Saki could care about him despite his faults. He hates himself so thoroughly that it boggles his mind that someone could love him while knowing he's nothing but a failure.

Masaomi's ability to make good life decisions is nigh nonexistent. He's not stupid, but he is compromised. When the aforementioned Izaya set Masaomi up, he stamped the official seal on Masaomi's insecurity and self-loathing. Self-esteem was out the window, and the trauma led him to question everything he'd ever felt for anyone. Masaomi no longer trusts his own intuition, no longer trusts himself, and his indecision is often his downfall. He doesn't believe in the people who could help him, and he doesn't believe in himself either, so he winds up depending on people like Izaya or his disgruntled gang members. He knows they're assholes; they've already screwed him over. They won't be able to hurt him again since he doesn't expect anything warm from them in the first place.

Personality:
Masaomi's character is summed up nicely in his name, which means "righteous vassal."

From a very young age, he aspired to be a righteous hero. He was the kind of kid who went on a 4AM excursion into the woods to bring back a single rhinoceros beetle for an even tinier bullied child when he could have just collected every one he caught and sold them for a profit. He hasn't changed as much as he thinks he has. Whether he's acting as a playful high school student or cornered gang boss, every silly or twisted action he takes revolves around this burning desire to save others. He may not always know what's right, but he knows how people should and should not be treated, and he gets into most of his trouble by taking the place of others, fighting so that they don't have to. Masaomi doesn't do things for profit; he does things for people. He lives to make the people he loves happy because that makes him feel needed. Masaomi Kida needs to feel needed. His heroic acts include anything from trying to cheer up and big brother his best friend through his new city life to gathering evidence and threatening a teacher who is sexually harassing a female student. In fact, even his ruthless gang activities started when he began interrupting unfair fights he saw on the streets. In short, Masaomi is what happens when a dumb teenage boy starts acting like a shounen manga hero in real life.

Masaomi's other core trait is his servile loyalty, his vassal-like notion that he owes anyone remotely willing to talk to him, let alone get close. He starts small, jumping through hoops to make his friends laugh at every opportunity. He does his absolute best to keep Mikado and Anri safe from anything and everything, considers it his mission in life, which makes it doubly agonizing when his efforts prove in vain. Because Masaomi's friends are really all he has, both in a physical and emotional sense, they mean everything to him. He even refers to Mikado as his courage. When Anri is sent to the hospital by the infamous Slasher, Masaomi snaps. He starts a gang war to avenge her, determined to make the Slasher pay at any cost. He won't just go to bat for his friends; he will go to war for them, whether they like it or not. They are good people, much better than him, and if they're too nice to seek revenge, he will do it in their stead. Even when it's revealed that the friends he's been trying so hard to protect are actually the enemies he's been trying to protect them from, he cannot and will not turn his back on them. That's what lands him here, after all, facing down a desperate thug with a gun because he threatened Mikado, and only one of them was going to leave that warehouse alive after that.
