Are you 18 or over? Yup.
Canon: Durarara!!
Character: Kida Masaomi
Timeline: Episode 24, after he's admitted to the hospital but before he speaks to Saki.
Personality: Kida Masaomi is quite the catch, if you can get past all the reasons he isn't. Spoiler alert, there are a lot of reasons. This particular high school student happens to be a notorious(ly bad) flirt, a bit on the obnoxious side, and convinced that his jokes are actually funny. They aren't. He's playful to a fault and over-animated, very passionate about what he enjoys. He constantly goes out trying to pick up girls, dragging his poor friend Mikado along with him when he can, but he doesn't seem to be very good at it. Of course, it's hard to get a girl to laugh with you rather than at you when you're flapping your elbows like a chicken. Somehow though, where it matters most, even these traits work in his favor. He works hard to make people feel better about themselves, and it's noticeable. He has a certain charisma, a very obvious energy about him that can liven up any party and make anything his own. One of those people at whom a person can only shake their head and smile fondly while saying, "That's Masaomi for you."
Unfortunately, this side of him, the side he displays loudly and proudly to the world, is little more than a shadow. It is the genuine article, certainly. He's not acting like something he's not, and he enjoys every minute of it to the point of being willing to do anything not to lose it. But it's only a fraction of the truth. There's more to it, chilling beneath the surface and shaping his otherwise innocent and sincere motives. It's partly for the benefit of others that he puts up the facade at all times, even when he's unhappy, and it's partly because he doesn't want them to know he's unhappy, especially why he's unhappy.
First and foremost, Masaomi is lonely. He has always been lonely. He felt as if he had no place in the world, possibly foreshadowed by the fact that his parents don't seem to give a rat's ass about him. Most of his biggest decisions stem from these feelings, as well as his biggest problems. Being alone in a big city is scary, and it can become so easy to find companionship in unhealthy places when there is no one there to hold you back. Why settle for something small though? He has the outgoing personality, the take-charge attitude, the charisma to lead a whole troupe of companions. Perhaps, even a gang of them. Yup. The Raira Academy Playboy is a gang leader, a lovely example of a young rebel without a cause. By creating an entire group, he created a place where he could belong. At least until he got caught up in what he saw as a bunch of junior high kids tussling and witnessed them evolve into victims of a dangerous gang war. It's then that he makes the biggest mistake of his life. He accepts what the man named Orihara Izaya offers him and starts to enjoy it. This, of course, gives Izaya the go ahead to take it all away from him. One devastating night in the rain loses Masaomi his girlfriend, his gang, and his stability, and the genius of Izaya's game is that Masaomi gives it all up on his own, too devastated to lead his gang and too cowardly to face his girlfriend in the hospital.
Guilt is one of the ultimate motivators. It is certainly one of Masaomi's. His overwhelming guilt quickly becomes depression as he loads the fate of those close to him atop his back and carries their weight like an anchor. Even as he slowly resolves some of his worst fears and doubts, he never, ever forgets them. They remind him every day of the consequences of his mistakes and of the people who have been hurt because he couldn't help them.
As such, he has an almost inhuman determination, perhaps even a desperation, to never allow his friends to fall into that world the way he did. He will evade, lie, act, cheat, betray, kill, and die to make sure it doesn't happen. Nothing makes him angrier, nothing makes him more frightened, than losing it all again. Because now his friends Mikado and Anri are all he perceives himself to have; they are his only remaining place to belong. Every transgression made toward them, every subtle sign of discomfort, he wants to change it. Despite that he doesn't let them know it, they're likely the only reason he's still around, and he's going to be the best damn friend they've ever had, even if it means teasing them about being in a love triangle together. He didn't have anyone to hold him back before, and so now he wants to be that person for other people.
What's grown out of this combination of motives is a fierce but faulty protectiveness. Not a possessiveness, but a strong loyalty and will to preserve the peace he so enjoys, even if his methods mean he may never again be able to experience that peace himself. Whether a person be a friend, an acquaintance, or a member of his gang, he places their safety into his own hands and takes charge of it with a firm and steady belief that "what they don't know won't hurt them." Masaomi separates his life into two realities: the reality of his life with his gang and the reality of his life at Raira with Mikado and Anri. He compartmentalizes and tries to keep both realities completely separate. So when the two worlds start to mix, his advice to both sides usually consists of "stay away from X," and any further questions will be answered with only vague ambiguity before the subject is changed and the conversation is steered back to the correct reality. He takes it upon himself to watch out for problems on all sides and react accordingly, without informing those he's trying to protect of the truth of his other reality; if no one else realizes what he's done for them, then he's done his job right. This has led to near fatal misunderstandings, his efforts to protect the people he cares about flipping on end when he unknowingly places them in danger instead, mostly due to Izaya's schemes.
It's usually while he's indulging this protectiveness though, that he allows himself to brood or be serious, and when Kida Masaomi gets serious, he gets serious. He knows the horrors that people are capable of, that life is never fair, and he can only face his obstacles head on with a deadly glare and a nail puller to the ribs. He didn't gain enough respect to run a gang through pretty words alone. Despite the silly jokes, the flirting, the loneliness, the insecurity, the guilt - Masaomi is a fighter. When something is really important to him, he's not going to let go of it so easily, even when it does nothing but hurt.
It's a little selfless, a little selfish, a little sacrificial, and a little self-sabotaging, but in the end, it's just a lot of Kida Masaomi.
Background: Masaomi spent his elementary school days in a very small town in Japan with his friend Ryuugamine Mikado, but he moved to Ikebukuro alone upon entering middle school. A strong feeling of displacement and loneliness led him to start a "team," influenced by various manga and anime that he enjoyed. They started out small, but as a year or two went by, their team became one of the infamous color gangs that were growing up around the city. The Yellow Scarves. They strutted their stuff, making their presence very well known, but they didn't cause a great deal of damage until another powerful color gang, Blue Square, began a rivalry with them.
It was while he was out "strutting his stuff" one day that he met his soon-to-be girlfriend, Mikajima Saki. She knew his name though they'd never met, and Orihara Izaya promptly introduced himself as the one who had told her, as well as her guardian of sorts. Masaomi didn't like or trust Izaya, but he enjoyed being with Saki. Unfortunately, Saki had an unhealthy dependency upon Izaya, to the point that when Masaomi asked if she'd jump off a cliff if Izaya told her to, she answered that she probably would. He wanted to free her from Izaya, insisting that if she knows that dependency is a flaw, she should fix it! He'd help her! It was after this that they began dating despite that his gang rivalry was growing exponentially by the day.
Kida expected the usual. They were delinquent gangs, a bunch of middle school kids, and he expected that their rivalry would follow the pattern of fair fights and staying under the radar as far as the law is concerned. Instead, Blue Square played dirty, using numbers and exploiting weaknesses. Masaomi explained that he watched over a hundred of his friends be injured in the these one-sided fights. He was getting scared as the situation spiraled out of control, and Saki suggested he take his problem to Izaya, just like she always did. Finally, he gave in.
Izaya's aid quickly turned the tide in their favor. He taught them fighting strategies and gave them valuable information that had Blue Square running. Masaomi stopped being bothered by Izaya, becoming nearly as dependent on him as Saki and forgetting what had put him on edge around the man in the first place. Then Orihara Izaya set his plan into motion, and he was reminded in the worst of ways.
Izaya told Saki to go to Blue Square, and shortly afterward, Masaomi got a call from their leader Izumii. Izumii joked around about having taken what was most important to Masaomi, and the Blue Square members broke Saki's leg while they held the phone out so the seething blond could hear her scream. It was that moment when reality hit him. This wasn't a bunch of kids fighting; this was a war, and he'd started it. The leader of the Yellow Scarves threw his phone in anger but just as quickly dove for it again, frantically dialing Izaya's number. When there was no answer, he bolted out of his apartment to go save her himself, continuing to call Izaya all the while. Izaya never picked up, and just as he was getting close to where they were holding Saki, he froze up. His bravado, his determination, the adrenaline - it all left him simultaneously, replaced by a paralyzing fear.
He was still standing there, drenched from the rain, when Kadota and co. (former Blue Square members who betrayed their gang when they heard there had been a kidnapping) drove past to take Saki to Raira General Hospital.
Saki fell into a coma at first, and while Masaomi was at her bedside, Izaya crashed the solemn moment. He taunted Masaomi into trying to punch him, then proceeded to humiliate the boy even further as painful and insulting word vomit poured from his lips. A lecture in twisted theology led to the conclusion that Masaomi's guilt would raise Saki up onto a pedestal, and she would become his god, the embodiment of his failure that would rule over him for the rest of his life. Izaya walked out after that, and even after Saki awoke, Masaomi did not visit her again. He kept returning to the hospital, psyching himself up to go if only to break up with her, but he could never bring himself to even enter the hospital building, let alone her room.
While standing outside the building during one of these pseudo-visits, Kadota and co. spotted him. They had lied to Saki, telling her that Blue Square had stopped Masaomi from saving her. Masaomi erupted into hysterics at the fact that they would expect him to lie to her after everything he'd already done to hurt her, but Kadota grabbed him by the collar and told him his choices were to either make it up to Saki by living with the lie or to tell her the truth himself. He also told Masaomi that Saki could see him from her window.
But if he couldn't so much as visit her, then there was no way he could admit how much of a coward he was to her. Instead, he grew increasingly depressed and withdrawn. Having given up his leadership of the yellow scarves, he felt he'd lost his place in the world again, questioned whether he'd ever had one, and despite that he knew Izaya was behind it, he blamed himself because he was the one who screwed up. Lost and in desperate need of any small comfort, he turned to the internet and chatted with his old friend Mikado online.
He left out everything about the Yellow Scarves and his dangerous experiences, making Ikebukuro sound like an amazing and magical place. During these online chats, Masaomi felt calm, like the world didn't have to be as harsh as the world he knew. He was the ultimate PR spokesman for Raira Academy especially, and soon enough he convinced Mikado to move to Ikebukuro so they could attend as first years together.
The day Mikado arrived, Masaomi showed him around the city and introduced him to several people, putting on a show of not having changed. When school started, Mikado and Masaomi were in different classes, but that certainly didn't stop them from meeting up before school, hanging out during lunch, and walking home together. After a few early meetings with a girl in Mikado's class, Sonohara Anri, they began hanging out with her as well. All three of them were a little uncomfortable with each other at first, for their own reasons that none of them mentioned to the other two, but they all decided individually that they liked things the way they were and settled happily into their friendship.
At one point, Mikado and Masaomi caught some delinquents in the act of bullying Anri. Just as Mikado got ready to intervene, Izaya showed up and pushed him out into the open before scaring the bullies away himself. Masaomi was uncharacteristically quiet and subdued as he introduced his friend to his enemy, but still he didn't tell Mikado anything about the man other than that he was dangerous.
When Mikado asked about the Dollars shortly afterward, Masaomi went straight to Kadota for information on them. There were rumors floating about the city that the Dollars were similar to a color gang, and all it took was one offhanded mention of interest for Masaomi to begin worrying. He absolutely refused to allow Mikado to end up the way he had. He didn't get any useful information on them, but Mikado himself assuaged his doubts, and he noted that spending time with Mikado in person might be morphing his show of courage into the real thing. One day at school, Masaomi presented Mikado with a list of people who could potentially be Dollars members. It was a fad among Raira students to vote on who was in the group. Mikado noted that there was a vote for a boy named Takiguchi, and Masaomi told him it was his own vote. He dragged Mikado up to the roof with the intent to ask Takiguchi straight-out whether he was in the Dollars. Takiguchi replied that he was. They talked to him about it, and with that, Masaomi was able to assuage Mikado's doubts, though he had no idea that Mikado himself was the leader of the Dollars.
Six months passed in this way, the trio of high school students enjoying their carefree, normal-teenager lives. Masaomi made a habit of intercepting a certain teacher who seemed to have his eyes on Anri and eventually decided that he would give Mikado a handicap in their love triangle, pushing his friend toward admitting his feelings for Anri in typically outlandish ways. It was clear his past still very much bothered him, however, as when he was alone he dropped the facade, often feeling surrounded by the growing numbers of Yellow Scarves in the city. Finally, as incidents of Slasher attacks were more frequently reported, he built up the courage to visit Saki. He tried to apologize, but he couldn't voice it. Instead he hastily broke up with her and left. After this though, he was able to visit her a few more times, even if he wasn't the best company. In fact, he seemed to visit her as a way to psych himself up for other things.
The inevitable downward spiral began when Kida Masaomi learned that Anri had been attacked by the Slasher. In reality, Anri herself was the true Slasher, owner of the mind-controlling blade Saika, though the attacks had been executed by one of Saika's rebellious children. Anri was injured when she defeated the culprit. All Masaomi could see, however, was a repeat of what had happened with Saki. Immediately after visiting Anri, he accepted the Yellow Scarves' request that he return.
He didn't tell Mikado or Anri about any of it. Instead, he lied to them about visiting Saki and threw the act into overdrive whenever he had to leave because his gang called him for something. His plan was to use the Yellow Scarves' connections in an attempt to get revenge on the Slasher for what he'd done to Anri. The rumor mill insisted that the Slasher was a member of the Dollars, so Masaomi once again turned to Kadota. He insisted that he just wanted to talk to the leader of the Dollars. He honestly didn't want to end up in another gang war. But as Kadota pointed out, they couldn't trust him completely because the other Yellow Scarves didn't feel the same way. The gang had changed in the year Masaomi had been away - members were now older and more violent. When Masaomi told Kadota about Anri, the man gave him the phone number of someone who would know the identity of the Dollars' leader.
It was Izaya's phone number.
In the end, Masaomi resolved to crawl back to Izaya, and after a bit of taunting, the information broker told Masaomi the truth: that Mikado was the Dollars' creator. Masaomi was thrown for a loop by this knowledge, but he redoubled his efforts to reign in the Yellow Scarves.
The situation was bad, but it became even worse when Anri sneaked into their meeting place and discovered that Masaomi led the Yellow Scarves. The gang members searched for her, but just before they found her, the infamous Headless Rider, an urban legend in Ikebukuro of a headless motorcyclist, charged into the yard and prepared to drive her to safety. Horada threw a pole at them despite Masaomi's orders against it, but Anri blocked it with Saika, and they made their escape. Masaomi immediately realized the ramifications of this event. The Headless Rider was affiliated with the Dollars. The fact that she saved the Slasher proved that the Slasher was affiliated with the Dollars. Even though Kida himself knew this was only conjecture, there was now no way for him to hold back his gang. They would be itching to wipe out the Dollars completely.
Attacks against Dollars members increased until Takiguchi, the Raira student Masaomi had pegged as part of the Dollars six months earlier, was also attacked. Masaomi no longer even tried to keep up his facade around Mikado and Anri and started skipping out on school. He was quickly spiraling back into depression, once again scared and having no idea how to resolve the situation, especially when he figured out who Anri was. Unfortunately, Masaomi wasn't the only one who figured that out, and Horada's group went after her. After a long and surreal chase, Horada was about to grab her, but Masaomi beat him to it and ran with her into an ally. Overwhelmed, he lashed out at her, asking her if it had been fun to trick him and suck up to Mikado. She slapped him and left.
He didn't go after her. He didn't go to Mikado. He didn't even return to the Yellow Scarves. Listless, he wandered the streets in the rain and tried to clear his head. Again, he was lost with nowhere to go.
It was while he was out that Horada called him to let him know he was "fired." Horada had found out that Masaomi's best friend was the leader of the Dollars and had told the gang members. There was now an execution order on Masaomi's head, and he'd never be able to show his face in Ikebukuro again. In fact, Horada and co. had shot Heiwajima Shizuo, one of the strongest men in Ikebukuro, and ran away yelling that Kida Masaomi had ordered it. None of this made Masaomi angrier than when Horada exclaimed that they'd be going after Mikado's head.
Masaomi tried to call members of the gang whom he was closer to, but their phones were all out of service. Horada and the others had dealt with them. The doubts he'd had toward Mikado and Anri seemed ridiculous now. What if Horada attacked Mikado? What if he kidnapped Anri to get to Mikado? It didn't matter who Mikado and Anri were, Masaomi had to prevent that at any cost. He dropped his phone and bolted.
He was delayed by Simon, a frighteningly powerful pacifist, who instantly realized something was wrong. Masaomi's eyes were those of someone ready to kill. Or to die. Masaomi gave his sushi restaurant fives stars, bowed, and then continued his course. Nothing could stop him now.
He barged into the Yellow Scarves base alone and unarmed. The majority of the Yellow Scarves were still scared stiff of him, backing away with his every step forward. Masaomi announced his intention to kill Horada right there and then, and Horada ordered the gang to attack. Horada threw a crowbar at his head. It hit dead on. Masaomi picked it up and fought back with it. He nearly reached Horada when he received another painful hit to the head and fell. Horada may have shot him through the head if not for Anri slicing through the building's door and Mikado arriving on the back of the Headless Rider's motorcycle.
When the Yellow Scarves began surrounding all of the intruders, an unexpected call rose up, and suddenly Kadota and co. were revealed to have infiltrated the gang, just as Horada and a large number of Blue Square had infiltrated the Yellow Scarves while Masaomi had been away - which explained why the Yellow Scarves had grown so violent. Masaomi was dumbfounded and suffering from one concussion too many to do much critical thinking, but there was still work to be done. Now that he knew Horada was part of Blue Square, he pushed forward despite his injuries, knocked the knife out of Horada's hand, and punched him square in the nose. He couldn't kill him, he explained, because Mikado and Anri weren't like them and didn't deserve to see a corpse.
All of his energy drained from him then, and he collapsed a final time. Mikado ran to him to support him, and Anri followed. They shared heartfelt apologies and confessions, and all three realized it had been nothing but a tragic misunderstanding. Masaomi took one of Mikado's hands in his and one of Anri's in the other before bringing Mikado and Anri's hands together and telling them they were perfect for each other. He asked them to take him to Raira General Hospital because he had a girl waiting for him there and then passed out from blood loss.
Mikado and Anri carried him to the van, and they sped off to Raira General, where Masaomi was quickly treated.
Abilities/Additional Notes: Masaomi is a normal, athletic fifteen year old boy. No magic, no super-strength, nada. He is, however, skilled in a fight and surprisingly creative with improv weapons.

Thank you all for your wonderful hospitality, doctors and nurses alike! It seems I've been well taken care of! ミ★(*・ω・)v Thanks!!★彡
There's just one teeeeeeensy tiiiiiiiiiny thing that's bothering me, if you'll allow me this one grievance.
I couldn't help but notice that I don't know where I am! ∑(*☼_☉*) How can this be?!
Getting out every once in a while may be good for your health, but this is a step too far!
Maybe some people can live on a compliment for a week, but a nice pair of pants goes a long way too! ヽ(≧△≦)ノ
Aaaah, even my scarf's missing! Oh, cruel world!
Sample RP: Kida Masaomi was strongly aware of two very pressing facts. The first was that he was not in Ikebukuro. The second was that he was in a hospital gown. Mikado and Anri must have gotten him to Raira General, but what happened after that? Were they okay? There was no one else here with him; he'd woken up alone.
A quick glance at his surroundings alerted him to a discarded PDA. He picked it up and sifted through every application he could find, ignoring the pain in his freshly-bandaged head when he moved too much. He couldn't afford to play it safe right now.
There was nothing in the archives or viewing history, but that map solidified that he definitely wasn't in Ikebukuro anymore. Was he even in Japan? Or was this some seriously twisted joke? Should he start calling for Toto and searching for red slippers? Should he be looking for Blue Square, or something worse? Could Izaya pull something like this off? Would he even if he could? Nothing on the PDA looked quite like it should have, and he had to accept that it wasn't connected to the internet as he knew it. Did that mean he wouldn't be able to log into any chat rooms? He bit his lip in frustration. Really, he shouldn't have gotten his hopes up. Who would give him such an easy way out? Nonetheless, with his best way to contact Mikado and the others shot, he continued fiddling with the device until he caught on to how it worked and prepared a hastily planned text message.
He didn't want to give away too much, but if he gave away too little, he may not learn anything. The best way to do this, he decided, was to stick with the tried and true method of thoroughly embarrassing himself. So long as he used a text medium, it shouldn't be overly compromising. After making sure to include mention of both hospital staff and his lack of proper clothing, he considered the possibility that Mikado and Anri were in his same situation somewhere else. How would he let them know it was him?
A swiftly typed "Aaaah, even my scarf's missing! Oh, cruel world!" solved his dilemma, he hoped, and he sent the message in urgent anticipation.
