personality
Strengths:
Above all else, Masaomi is loyal. He is so desperate for companionship that once he's gained it, he will do most anything to keep it. The very plot of DRRR!! depends on this trait, seeing as it is Masaomi who continues to try to save his best friend Mikado after Mikado teams up with his rival gang and even shoots him in the leg. While denial plays an unhealthy role in Masaomi's loyalty for a larger part of the series, the intensity with which he cares for his friends (no matter who they are or what they've done) is clear in his every action. He sees himself as a hero, a knight in shining armor, so he spends his school days getting into fights to protect his underlings, threatening a teacher who makes advances on his friend Anri, and taking on his entire gang single-handedly before they can target Mikado. His recklessness knows no bounds, but when put to use for the sake of his friends, it can make miracles happen. Masaomi describes looking out for Mikado as his hobby, and that has never been a lie. He looks after all his friends with everything he has, even if he has to sacrifice everything he has to do it.
Masaomi is also determined. He can be the most indecisive and evasive person on the planet at times, but once he makes up his mind, he will go through with whatever he's decided, no matter how impossible. "Half-assed" is not a word anyone would use to describe this boy. In fact, two former Russian assassins and the leader of a Saitama bike gang say rather that he has a fire in his eyes, ready to kill or be killed when the time comes for it. He is either all in with his latest escapade to help his friends, or he is all about hiding from everything he holds dear; there is no middle ground. Once he's decided that there is something he must do for himself, for someone else, to preserve his relationships as they are, he will take action. Whether when he returned to leading his delinquent gang for his friends' safety or when he accepted work for the man he hates most in the world in order to provide for his girlfriend, he's willing to go to extremes for what he decides is right. It's just unfortunate that most of his decisions are wildly misguided.
Flaws:
As he has been told over and over and as he has long since accepted, Masaomi is a true, blue coward. There are many things he is afraid of, but what frightens him most is that people will realize just how flawed and cowardly he is. Bubbling beneath his unshakable love for his friends is also a fear that those very friends would hate him should they come to know what he's really like. That is much more terrifying than any amount of pain he could be made to endure. This fear leads him to abandon his girlfriend in the hospital for a year out of guilt and keeps him from meeting his best friends in person for six months after they get a glimpse of his dark side. He simply cannot cope with losing people, often resorting to running away from them before they get the chance to leave. He'd rather give everything up himself than have it taken away from him again.
This also stems from life-long trust issues. Masaomi's parents never cared much about him, letting him roam around on his own at four in the morning even when he was a little kid. Then scheming information broker Izaya bulldozed into his life, coaxed Masaomi into relying on him, and shattered his tiny world with a set-up that left his girlfriend to be tortured by his rival gang. Masaomi couldn't save her; he'd been too afraid. Since then, not only does Masaomi have difficulty trusting authority even in life-threatening situations, he has trouble believing that anyone but his girlfriend Saki could care about him completely. He hates himself so thoroughly that it boggles his mind that someone could love him while knowing he's nothing but a failure. This leads him to lie constantly about himself, putting up a flirty, obnoxious front while never being able to trust people with his entire self.
Masaomi's ability to make good life decisions is nigh nonexistent. He's not stupid, but he is compromised. When the aforementioned Izaya set Masaomi up, he stamped the official seal on Masaomi's insecurity and self-loathing. Self-esteem was out the window. What Masaomi thought was courage and love and victory was proven to him to be nothing of the sort. He was left empty with no choice but to start over from scratch. Masaomi no longer trusts his own intuition, no longer trusts himself, and his indecision is often his downfall. He doesn't believe in himself, so he winds up depending on no one but Izaya or his gang buddies because he already knows what they're like. They won't be able to hurt him since he doesn't expect anything warm from them in the first place.
Miscellaneous:
Masaomi's favorite thing in the world is girls. He's an unrepentant flirt who will happily compliment a woman's breasts like it's something she'd ever want to hear. He loves his inappropriate sexual jokes and has endless fun teasing girls he finds attractive. So, naturally, he isn't very successful with them. While he loves to act like the ultimate casanova, however, it's all bluster that he can't back up. He doesn't even try to hide it. Upon asking his friend Anri to date him, he tells her that he doesn't need her answer right away because he's already confessed to several other girls and is still deciding which one he likes most. He's cut back on the flirting since he and Saki got back together. He genuinely loves her and would never want to compromise that again. But he will never be able to deny that the fairer sex is his favorite, and even just talking to a girl is more fun than talking to a guy.
In a rather polarizing twist, Masaomi is also the leader and founder of the Tokyo color gang Yellow Scarves. He started the gang in middle school and subsequently began his endless turf war with rival gang Blue Square. He's been in many street brawls and gained a name for himself among Tokyo's delinquents as a formidable fighter. As Shogun (i.e. General), Masaomi acts very different than he does when he's around his school friends. Where he regales friends with silly jokes, he's stoic and calculating for his subordinates. Where he lies to his friends so that they won't worry about him, he kicks misbehaving underlings in the nose and threatens them. Where he forgives his friends for everything, he seeks revenge on anyone who might harm them. Taking on the mantle of Shogun is just another way in which he acts as the hero, the knight in shining armor. It's a twisted sort of selflessness, bastardized by ego and regret.
With two such conflicting worlds inside his head, it's no wonder that he has so much trouble finding a balance between them.
game plans
Starting Faction: Warlord
Goals: I am well aware that I am apping Masaomi in as heavily injured on the Warlord's side and what that may entail. That's part of the fun for me as I enjoy the darker themes of this game, so no worries there.
Eventually I'd like to play with the opposing factions angle. Masaomi is no stranger to turf wars, and he's also used to accidentally ending up as the bad guy. In this scenario, he'd start running from the Warlord as much as possible while also feeling like he doesn't deserve to side with the Empress, and that appeals to me a lot. Whether Masaomi ends up as a double-agent for the Empress or going out of his way to convince himself he's too terrible a person to belong anywhere but with the Warlord... I'd love to see which way he goes.
